What Your Wedding Photographer Wants You to Know
What is the most important thing to know about wedding photography? It’s not like getting your picture taken at school or the DMV! Photographers – good ones – do not just point and shoot without regard to the composition of the photo. Nor do they stop at capturing the formal or expected shots. There is an exciting world of creativity within the field of wedding photography, and the best practitioners can capture the images that reveal the magic of your big day. But did you know that you are an important part of the photography process as well? Here are some things your wedding photographer wants you to know.
- Make a list! A formal shot can get pretty crowded sometimes. We have the happy couple, parents, siblings, grandparents, bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls…the list goes on and on. Keyword list. Give your photographer a list of the people – by name – who you want included in your formal pictures.
- What do you like? If you are in love with black and white photos, tell your photographer. If you love the photojournalistic style, tell your photographer. If you want to be shot only from your good side, tell your photographer! Take a look at some wedding photos online and look at the different styles. If you find a website that has just what you want, send your photographer the link so she knows what you prefer.
- Always, always, always meet with your photographer. A photographer you don’t really like – are you going to trust her with your most precious photos? Make sure you choose someone with technical ability but also people skills.
- Get the family involved. If you are having family formals, tell the family ahead of time! Make sure they stick around and do not head off to hit the champagne at the reception.
- Read your contract. Make sure you know what you’re getting. Ask any questions before you sign.
- Know what to expect. Formal shots take a while. Expect to be there for 45 minutes or more. Expect your photographer to be in weird places – you may not know what she’s doing hanging from the chandelier, but we guarantee you’ll love the picture.
Wedding photographers can produce amazing shots – but they do need your help. A few simple steps and some preparation can make a world of difference in the final photos.
